What is the ACT?
The ACT is an exam that measures the academic knowledge, language proficiency, and logical reasoning skills acquired by a student throughout high school. Accepted by all universities in the United States and Canada, this exam is recognized by more than 225 higher education institutions worldwide.
SAT vs. ACT: Key Differences

ACT Exam Content and Sections
The ACT consists of a single session lasting approximately 3.5 hours and covers 5 main sections:
1. English
- Questions: 75 Questions (45 Minutes)
- Content: Sentence structure, punctuation, and usage. Speed and practice are the keys to this section.
2. Math
- Questions: 60 Questions (60 Minutes)
- Content: Algebra, functions, geometry, and trigonometry. Calculators are permitted throughout the entire section.
3. Reading
- Questions: 40 Questions (35 Minutes)
- Content: Making inferences and logical reasoning. This is often considered the most challenging section regarding time management.
4. Science
- Questions: 40 Questions (35 Minutes)
- Content: Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences. It focuses on interpreting tables, graphs, and research results rather than rote memorization.
5. Writing (Optional)
- Duration: 40 Minutes
- Content: Essay writing on a specific topic. Some elite universities require this section for admission.
Application Process and Scoring
- Validity: ACT scores are valid for 5 years.
- Frequency: Held 6 times a year on “National Test Dates.”
- Target Score: For elite institutions like the Ivy League, a score of 30 or higher should be targeted.
- Attempt Limit: A candidate can take the ACT a maximum of 12 times in total.
