PLAB AND UKMLA EXAMS: THE PATH TO MEDICAL PRACTICE IN THE UK
For medical graduates aspiring to practice medicine in the United Kingdom, the licensing system has entered a significant transition phase as of 2024 and 2025. The PLAB exam, which was previously only for international graduates, has now been integrated under the UKMLA (UK Medical Licensing Assessment) umbrella—a common standard for both UK and international medical graduates.
1. The Relationship Between PLAB and UKMLA
The most important rule during this transition is that UKMLA is not the name of a new exam, but the name of the new overarching assessment system.
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs): You will still sit for exams called PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. However, the content of these exams is now strictly based on the UKMLA Content Map.
- UK Graduates: Instead of their university finals, they take the AKT and CPSA exams under UKMLA standards.
- The Result: PLAB is now “UKMLA compliant.” From 2025 onwards, the terminology will gradually shift entirely toward UKMLA.
2. Exam Stages (AKT and CPSA)
The assessment consists of two main parts measuring medical knowledge and clinical skills:
A. Stage One: PLAB 1 / AKT (Applied Knowledge Test)
This stage tests the application of theoretical medical knowledge to clinical scenarios.
- Format: 180 Multiple Choice Questions (Single Best Answer), computer-based.
- Duration: 3 hours.
- Content: Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ethics, and emergency medicine.
- Location: Can be taken at various centers worldwide, including Turkey.
B. Stage Two: PLAB 2 / CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment)
This is a clinical exam measuring communication with patients and practical skills.
- Format: An OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) consisting of 16–18 different stations.
- Duration: Each station lasts approximately 8–10 minutes.
- Content: History taking, physical examination, diagnosis, breaking bad news, and clinical procedures (e.g., venepuncture).
- Location: Manchester (GMC Clinical Assessment Centre).
3. Requirements for Eligibility
To begin the process, candidates must meet these three fundamental requirements:
- Medical Degree (PMQ): Graduation from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
- English Proficiency: * IELTS: Minimum 7.0 in each section, with an overall score of at least 7.5.
- OET (Medicine): Minimum grade of ‘B’ in all four sub-tests (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking).
- GMC Account: Creating an online account via the General Medical Council (GMC) and verifying your documents.
