What Is the ÖSD Exam? An outstanding future in Austria
ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) is an internationally recognised German language proficiency exam approved by the official authorities of the Austrian state.
It is considered equivalent to Germany’s Goethe or TestDaF exams, but it has its own distinctive structure and focus.
Key Features of the ÖSD Exam
ÖSD is offered at all levels from A1 to C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (GER/CEFR).
- Austria-Focused
- The exam takes into account the standard varieties of German used in Austria, Germany and Switzerland (pluricentric approach).
- Communication-Focused
- Rather than grammar knowledge, it measures how functionally you can use the language in everyday life or in an academic setting.
- Modular Structure
- From B1 upwards the exam consists of modules. If you fail a module, you only retake that module, not the whole exam.
Where Is the ÖSD Required?
- University Study in Austria
- Admission to Austrian universities (University of Vienna, TU Wien, etc.) usually requires an ÖSD certificate at B2 or C1 level.
- Germany and Switzerland
- The ÖSD certificate is also recognised by universities and employers in Germany and Switzerland.
- Visa and Residence
- The A1 German requirement (Deutsch vor Zuzug) for family reunification and first residence permits in Austria can be met with an ÖSD certificate.
- Medicine and Healthcare
- It is the most popular exam for those who want to work as doctors or nurses in Austria and need to prove their language proficiency.
Exam Structure
The exam covers the four main areas of language ability:
- Lesen (Reading)
- Understanding and analysing a variety of texts.
- Hören (Listening)
- Following dialogues and presentations.
- Schreiben (Writing)
- Writing forms, letters or essays.
- Sprechen (Speaking)
- Expressing yourself, discussing a topic or giving a presentation.
