Frequently Asked Questions: Everything About the AP Programme

  1. Does my school have to be an AP school for me to take AP exams?

No. Even if your school does not offer the AP programme, you can prepare for the exams externally (as an external candidate) with private lessons or group classes from Study First Academy. You only need to sit the exam session at a school that is a test centre.

  2. What scores do universities accept?

Generally, you need at least a 3 out of 5 to get exemption or credit from universities. However, top schools such as Harvard, Oxford or Stanford usually require a 4 or 5.

  3. How many AP courses should I take?

This depends entirely on your goals and intended major. For admission to a prestigious university, it is generally recommended to show exam success in 3 to 5 different courses. Our advisors will create a personalised schedule to balance your academic workload.

  4. When are AP exams held and how many times can I take them?

AP exams are held only once a year, in May. If you do not get the score you want in a subject, you can retake it the following year; however, so as not to disrupt your application timeline, Study First Academy’s priority recommendation is to complete this process in 11th grade.

  5. Are my AP scores valid at universities in Türkiye?

Yes. Many private (foundation) universities in Türkiye (Koç, Sabancı, Özyeğin, etc.) grant exemptions from certain courses or award academic achievement scholarships to students with high AP scores.

  6. What is the difference between the SAT and AP?

The SAT is a foundational exam measuring general academic ability (Maths and English) for university admission. AP, on the other hand, is an academic programme that proves your university-level expertise in specific subjects (Physics, Economics, History, etc.).

  7. Do wrong answers cancel out correct ones?

No. Only your correct answers are scored in AP exams. This allows students to strategically answer every question.

  8. How long does the Study First Academy preparation take?

The preparation time varies depending on the student’s background and the difficulty of the chosen course. For ideal preparation, we recommend starting the programme at least 6-8 months before the exam date (May).

What Does the AP Programme Give You?

Your Turkish high school diploma alone may not be enough for many top universities abroad. AP is an international key that helps you overcome this academic barrier:

University Exemption
High scores (4 or 5) in the exams exempt you from the related courses at university. This saves time and significantly reduces education costs.
Boost Your Admission Chances
University admissions committees are 85% more favourable towards students who have completed the AP programme.
Academic Prestige
By taking university-level courses while still in high school, you get a step ahead of your peers academically.

The Study First Academy Difference

Your school does not need to offer an AP curriculum for you to prepare for the exams! With Study First Academy’s expert teaching staff, you can reach your goals independently of your school.

AP Scoring and Assessment System

AP exams are graded from 1 to 5. At Study First Academy, our goal is always to reach "Very Well Qualified" (4) and "Extremely Well Qualified" (5) scores:
