Your First Step Into the Future With Study First Academy: The SAT Guide Let studying abroad be more than a dream!
On the path we set out on with the motto “Let studying abroad be more than a dream!”, one of the most important turning points for students who want to take their academic careers international is the SAT.
Often seen as the global counterpart of national exams once held in Turkey such as ÖSS, YGS or LYS, the SAT is a golden key especially for those who want to pursue an undergraduate degree in the United States. But the SAT is not limited to America: it is a global standard accepted by the vast majority of prestigious universities around the world.
What Is the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)?
Administered by The College Board since 1926, the SAT is a prestigious exam that measures students’ academic competence. Far from rote learning, it is built around the student’s ability to reason, analyse and solve problems.
- Global Recognition
- Accepted by many universities, above all in America but also in Europe and Canada.
- Its Role in Turkey
- One of the main criteria for international students seeking admission to Turkey’s leading universities.
- Exam Calendar
- The digital SAT is held 7 times a year, both in the US and at international test centres including Turkey (including leading private schools in Istanbul).
SAT Exam Structure: What Will You Face?
Since 2024 the SAT has been fully digital (Digital SAT) worldwide and is taken in the Bluebook app. It has two main sections; each is scored from 200 to 800, for a total score of 400 to 1600.
-
Reading and Writing
54 questions, 64 minutes; made up of two 32-minute modules.
- Critical Reading: Understanding, inference and analysis based on short, varied academic passages.
- Writing: Grammar, punctuation and expressing ideas clearly and effectively.
- Vocabulary: Interpreting the meaning of words correctly in context.
-
Math
44 questions, 70 minutes; made up of two 35-minute modules.
- Scope: Algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry.
- Calculator: The built-in Desmos calculator can be used throughout the Math section.
Adaptive design: The second module of each section adapts to your performance on the first. Total testing time is 2 hours 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break. The SAT Subject Tests (SAT 2) and the SAT Essay were discontinued in 2021; universities no longer ask for them.
What Makes the SAT Different
The SAT differs from the exam systems we are used to in a few key ways:
No Penalty for Wrong Answers
In this exam, made up mostly of 4-option questions, wrong answers do not lower your score.
Analytical Approach
The exam measures not only "what you know" but "how you use what you know". Much like ALES, it requires strong concentration and fast reading.
Holistic Evaluation
Universities do not look only at your score; your projects, community service and the way you express yourself are also part of your success.
Validity Period
SAT scores have no official expiry date; universities generally accept results from the last 5 years.
